AT&T + T-Mobile = WTF?

Over at Arstechnica, they have a great article on the AT&T/T-Mobile merger and it’s relationship to anti-trust laws. I understand that the FCC has to go through the process of reviewing the bid and it’s repercussions regarding a competetive market. What I don’t understand is anyone thinking this is seriously a good idea!

With Ma Bell and the Big V doing away with their unlimited data plans, that leaves only Sprint left having both a decent network, decent phones, and unlimited data. T-mobile has the cheaper plans and is widely accept as the most customer service oriented company, but have a business hurting lack of LTE or WiMax (which I think they are supposed to throw the switch some time this year). The graph shows the current market share of all wireless carriers. I think it pretty much says it all…

Well lookie what I found! I had all but completely forgotten about this blog! I’m thinking I’m going to give blogging yet another go. Who knows, maybe it’ll actually kinda stick this time. Plus, if I manage to put a new podcast back together, I’ll need a place to post. What brought this whole thought process about with remembering this blog was that I was reading an Arstechnica article yesterday about one of the larger bot nets being beheaded by a coalition spearheaded by Microsoft. I realized that I wanted to post some commentary regarding it and didn’t think I had any place to do so. I then remembered this last bastion of any form of decent (and I use that term loosely) web presence.

Thanks to the WordPress.com tech support for their quick and efficient resolution to my login issues!

Stay tuned for more updates. I might even write my editorial I mentioned here soon!

24 (x3) Hours to Go….

So here we are, 3 days to go untill we fly out for Toronto! I just know that the TechTV Holiday Meet-up is going to be an absolute blast. This weekend has been killer, too! We did some organizational things for Hak.5 on Friday. Also on Friday I had my company Christmas Dinner, and some haklings came over to hang out and knock a few back. Then the haklings left and we continued to drink beer. Saturday, I went with my g/f and our buddy Jon to go see Aeon Flux and then later, the whole group of us went to see the Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe. Post movies, it was time for us to party it up here on set after we turned it into Club Hak5. We danced, played beer pong, listened to awesome music, some of us got more drunk than others, but we all got atleast a good buzz.

Okay, so earth round…Long story short, it’s been a great weekend, and I have an even better week coming up. Monday and Tuesday at work are going to be the longest days ever!

Talk about an event-filled week! Frank came down to visit us here at Hak.5 and have us on the Live Techphile podcast. Frank was also kind enough to be featured on our show as a special guest host in our “glue” segments, a commercial for another product from MicroShaft, and something special that you’ll just have to find out for yourself when Hak.5 episode 5 is released on Dec. 5th.

So, all in all, we’ve gotten a lot of work done around here and still had time to drink it up! It had been an absolute blast having Frank to visit. I do believe that here ends my post, hopefully I’ll have something a little more intelligable to say next time when I’m not warding off the after-effects of alcohol.

D and I have really kicked it into high gear in preparation for out visit with Frank from the Techphile podcast. His flight lands on Thursday the 1st. He will be our special guest host for episode 5 of Hak.5 on top of airing the live techphile podcast from our set!

D and I, with the help of my lovely girlfriend, have cleaned our home from top to bottom and it is now spotlessly beautiful! On top of that, we did some serious remodeling to the set itself, drastically improving the lighting quality. With that done, there is only one last major thing to be done untill Hak.5 set 2.0 is done!

That’s pretty much it. Short and sweet. I guess I should crawl in bed considering that I have to get up for work in about 3 hours. Sux to be me….but not really.

….That’s the sound of the men, working on the chain gang…..

So all sorts of things have been going on around here, and not all of them have been very good. I Had a great night with my girlfriend the night before Thanksgiving. We went out to Outback Steakhouse for dinner. Some how, she had managed to never go there before that night. She really enjoyed it and we both enjoyed each other’s company immensely.

Thanksgiving Day was pretty good. I went to my brother’s house and he, my mom, one of my brother’s friends, and I went out to a restaurant to eat. Once again the dining and company were very much enjoyed and appreciated.

Enter issues:

Issue number 1 -

My girlfriend and I planned on going to visit an old friend of ours that we haven’t seen in a long time. They never got back to us so that feel through pretty quick. She was much more upset then I was. Not to say that it wasn’t a let down for me. I was really looking forward to seeing her (our friend), but it’s been so long that I can stand to wait longer. My girlfriend on the other hand, used to see her all the time and now hasn’t been down to visit in like 5 months. Prior to that, they used to hang out a lot, and were best friends.

Issue number 2 -

This stems from issue number 1. Since my mini-roadtrip was more or less canceled, I had the time to finish up my segment for the show. That in itself is a good thing, except for the fact that we managed to loose a very important piece of hardware that I needed, A FREAKING MOTHERBOARD! Now really, who on Earth can loose a damned motherboard with a freaking video card attached? The stupid thing just disappeared! Now, crisis averted, we realized that we had another spare that actually suited our needs better. The problem itself then stems to issue number 3.

Issue number 3 -

Due to the original lack of mobo, D and I searched high and low all over the apartment. We searched all day pretty much. This threw us into a pretty bad funk. With that and some other things that didn’t work out in our favor, it just seemed like nothing was going right. My girlfriend comes over in a pretty chipper and happy mood, and that falls off pretty quickly, because, like me, she feeds off the ambient emotional state. D and I find the replacement mobo, we get to work on the project and feel better, she doesn’t. That makes for a less than enjoyable evening, trying to cheer her up and still get some work done.

Issue number 4 – The Funk continues….

She never really gets out of her bad mood, and we end up having a long talk behind closed doors. She thinks that she’s being too demanding. I don’t think that’s the case at all. She might be a little demanding, but I don’t think it’s anything out of the ordinary. I certainly have to take some of the blame. I just don’t manage my time well. Granted, time is not something that I have a lot of anymore. We do this show for fun, but we promised quality content delivered and a regular interval.

Hak.5 promised to come out on the 5^th of every month and always contain high quality content in an informative and entertaining manner. We don’t get paid for this (though we would like to!) and we do it now only for the sheer love of it. A promise is a promise though, so we work hard and use most of our ‘free’ time to work on the show and make sure that it is ready for delivery on the 5^th. A commitment like that doesn’t really allow for a text book, regular type relationship. I have so much time vested in this that I like my significant other here just so that I can give her a hug and a kiss when I have a break. She does come over a lot when we are working, and that is at my request. Maybe I should stop that, because it is mostly selfish. I just enjoy her presence, even if it is just her sitting on the couch, reading a book while D and I are trying to figure out how to shoot something, and what to say.

Issue number 5 -

We have had a lack of internet at night here. The past few nights, our cable internet just likes to crap out anywhere between 6pm and 9pm. The repair man just came and went. Appearantly, the connection is good from the cable box to the modem, so it isn’t due to lack of connectivity. He actually said that there is too much signal going to the modem. It was explained to me that the modem has an optimum operating signal range from -5 to +9, above or below that, it will crap out the connection. We have a +19. He’s having maintenance come out and look for a bad amplifier or something. To me, that still doesn’t explain why our connection is good during the day, then dies when it gets cold.

Anyway, that should pretty much catch everyone up to speed, and I hope I don’t get flamed for getting ‘too personal’ in my personal blog…..boy if that doesn’t sound odd.

Ha HA! The dankis finally has a blog! I guess I was just holding out for when WordPress became free so that I could have greater creative control and didn’t have to spend any money on hosting and DNS. I guess I would qualify as a cheap bastard, oh well!
